Fleas, Ticks and Their Prevention
Fleas can be a problem even in the cleanest of houses and are becoming more so as our lifestyles increasingly suit theirs. It is in fact only the adult fleas which feed by sucking blood from our pets and these account for only a small proportion of the total flea population. 95% of flea eggs, flea larvae and pupae live in the environment - hidden in your home under floorboards, in carpets, sofas and your pets bedding. It is essential therefore to treat both your pets and your home in the event of a flea infestation.
If you pet has fleas then you should also treat for worms as flea larvae can become infected with tapeworm eggs. This means if your pet ingests a flea whilst grooming it too can become infected with tapeworms.
Prevention is always better than cure! We recommend treating pets monthly with an effective flea control product which you can obtain from us without making an appointment. Modern flea killers when used correctly are safe and most are sold in the form of a 'spot-on' based on an animals weight. To ensure accurate dosing it is therefore useful to know how heavy your pet is. All our branches are equipped with flatbed weighing scales so please feel free to drop in and check your pets weight. We can also give expert advice on the application of flea control products and household sprays.
It is worth remembering that flea products suitable for dogs may not be suitable for cats and may even cause harm due to toxicity so it is important to use a flea treatment recommended by a vet.
