You are probably reading this because you have an itchy pet who has not got better with standard treatments. Although non-life threatening, having an itchy pet is very frustrating for you as well as very uncomfortable for your dog or cat and you are obviously anxious to do the best for your pet.

You are not alone. It has been estimated that 15% of the dog population of the UK suffers from allergic skin disease and it is possible that this figure is increasing. The figure is not known for cats, but certainly itch and its effects is a common problem for them too.

There is a lot of about allergy, but it is not possible for your veterinary surgeon to keep up to date everything, so at Croft Vets we have one vet, dermatologist Judith Joyce, who is ideally placed to stay up to date and treat all cases of allergy.

Unfortunately there is no cure for allergy. In recent years, however, there have been huge advances in the diagnosis and treatment of allergy and, while we still haven't found a cure, our aim is to find a safe and effective way of keeping your pet as comfortable as possible at all times of the year, throughout his or her life. This can usually be done very effectively, although it has to be said that it does mean regular trips to the surgery and, as a committed pet owner, your input is essential in helping us with these treatments.

We can control nearly all cases of allergy safely and effectively. We have kept up to date with all the latest tests, drugs and complementary therapies which, used either singly or in combination can be used to make your pets treatment as successful as possible.

Extra time is taken to discuss the best treatment plan for your pet. This requires a careful clinical and dermatological examination, so extra long appointments are set aside to discuss your pets problems. This is much more successful than trying to rush through information in a busy evening surgery, or trying to answer questions by telephone.

Croft Vets allergy clinics have been designed to make all these advances available to you and to treat your pets allergies as effectively as possible. Your vet may refer you to the allergy clinic, or if you are interested, please ask the receptionist next time you are in or ring us on 0191 217 0123 to make an appointment.

When you make your appointment, be ready to allow at least half an hour to discuss your pets itching problems.
